The "rule of three" is a principle in writing that suggests that things that come in threes are inherently funnier, more satisfying, or more effective than other numbers of things.  Think, "Three's Company", "Third times a Charm", " Three Little Pigs" and so on... The old saying goes, "It happens in 3's. People say magical things happen in 3's. I might be inclined to believe that, to some degree.
